With spring in the air once again, some railway modellers might well be thinking about constructing a garden layout – but how many dare go a step further and consider the possibility of live steam?
Perhaps last year’s TV mini-series The Biggest Little Railway in the World, which followed the progress of a dedicated team as they laid improvised 32mm (1.26in) track over the full 71 miles from Fort William to Inverness (covered almost entirely by a Roundhouse Engineering Silver Lady tank engine, relieved for short bursts by a Little John battery-electric locomotive) got a few more people thinking about the same idea.
The good news from Roundhouse, which supplies model live steam locomotives for G-scale, SM32 and SM454 railway layouts, is that it is experiencing record growth and has been taking advantage of the support on offer by Business Doncaster, a partner in the Sheffield City Region Growth Hub Enhancement Project, to improve its prospects even more.
